SINGLES MADE SIMPLE

TENNIS TIP-Singles Made Simple:

Keeping to these concepts as a base will help you to execute a better game plan:

1.  Rally Crosscourt - Remember that the net is lowest, and the court is longest when hitting crosscourt, also hitting crosscourt is more natural.  So most shots should be hit crosscourt in order to reduce errors.

2. Exploit their weakness - Hit to their weakness-even though it may not be crosscourt… BUT don’t foul yourself up trying to hit to their weakness if your chances of making the shot aren’t good.

3.    Open up their weakness-for instance if a player has a weak backhand it is likely that they are good at covering it up and often their best shots come from moving around their weakness.  Hit wide to their forehand first and then the weak side opens up.

4.   Follow in short balls - Come in when playing a shot inside ¾ court.  Just continue your momentum and make them come up with a pass.  There are 3 possibilities, you can cut off their shot and hit a winner, they can pass you or force a miss or you can play a volley that that they have to try to pass you on again.  The odds are in your favor.

5.     Playing Volleys – Play high volleys for winners to the open court and play low volleys back to the same side of the court that you are on so it will be harder for your opponent to pass you.

6.   Serves and Returns, quality and consistency – in both cases the best shots that you can hit with consistency is the goal.  If you can’t be consistent then the good shots you hit won’t make up for the errors.

7.     Believe in your plan – it’s important to have belief in what constitutes your best game and know that if you execute it well that is your best chance to win.  Keep working to execute what you know works.

8.  Summary – Get your serves and returns into play as often as possible, rally crosscourt most of the time, exploit the opponents weakness, come to the net on short balls, put away high volleys, hit low volleys to the side of the court you are on to have another chance and believe in your strategy.
