Start with your Toolbox

If you were to build something, one of the first things to do would be to check the tools you would need in order to build it properly.  If you needed to hammer a nail you could use the handle of a screwdriver, but it would take a long time and be less than a great way to work.  The finished product might also suffer from having to work around having the right tools for the job.

It seems in Tennis many of us are willing to use a rock as a hammer.  Why would someone who invests their time, effort and soul into tennis, not invest some of that time and effort into developing the tools that will help them be better players and enjoy the game more?  Got an answer?  … No, I mean a good answer… the main reason that I see is that many of us feel that making a change won’t actually happen or we just don’t want to have someone else help us, it would lessen the accomplishment.  NEWSFLASH ---- after this amount of time it isn’t going to be accomplished without help!!  So that you don’t feel too bad, Roger Federer gets help every day from HIS COACH.  He’s already better than us.

Having a full array of shots that may be called upon at the proper time is not something that is beyond your capabilities.  It takes planning and effort.  You’re already playing and competing, so you obviously care if you play better or not.  Why not add tools to your toolbox so that you can build a better game?  It is more enjoyable to play better, improve and make more plays on the court than to try hammering with a screwdriver?
